Timeline

    • 1845 after extensive civic lobbying, the UK’s second Government School of Design was established in Glasgow on Ingram Street.  After extensive civic lobbying, the UK’s second Government School of Design was established in Glasgow.
    • 1853 name changed to The Glasgow School of Art. 
    • 1869 the school moves to the buildings on Sauchiehall Street, in a corner of the McLellan Galleries
    • 1896 The School acquires the site on Renfrew Street, Garnethill. Director Francis Newbery runs a competition run for the design of the GSA’s first purpose-built home  
    • 1897 the firm of Honeyman & Keppie appointed based on the now famous design submitted by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and work commences
    • 1899 The East Wing was completed, opening in December 1899 
    • 1907 Work starts on the West Wing heralding the birth of modernism
    • 1909 The completed building opens in December 1909.
    • 2007 Nearly 100 years from the completion of the Building, the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project commenced.
    • 2009 Building celebrates 100th anniversary.  RIBA announces the Mack as ‘the best British-designed building of the past 175 years’ in a public vote.
    • 2010 Steven Holl Architects and JM Architects appointed design Mackintosh’s neighbour – the Reid Building
    • 2013 Reid Building formally opened
    • 2014 West wing of Mackintosh Building damaged by fire during Degree Show install
    • 2016 Mackintosh Restoration project commenced involving restoration and refurbishment of entire building as new home first year undergraduate students. 
    • 2018 During the last phases of the restoration and refurbishment, the Mackintosh Building suffers a second, more significant fire.
    • 2018 Major stabilization of the Mackintosh Building structure undertaken with over 800 Tonnes of scaffolding
    • 2019 Debris clearance commences  
    • 2020 GSA appoints Avison Young to undertake Strategic Outline Business Case to help determine the future of the Mackintosh Building.

    • 2021 With thousands of tonnes of debris removed, the debris clearance is now completed
    • 2021 The GSA publishes the Strategic Outline Business Case
